Lessons Learned From My First $1000 Month

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 11:14 AM PDT

This is a guest post from Kevin Sanders. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

January, 2010, was a breakthrough month for Strongandfit.net. It was my first time earning over one thousand dollars in a month. The month was a "perfect storm"—a culmination of a few factors:

  • Over a year of consistently producing content.
  • Sticking around long enough to get ranked and indexed in google.
  • Discovering affiliate marketing.
  • New Year's Resolutions—people thinking about fitness and being willing to invest in their health.

There are probably other factors (let's not forget dumb luck). But you get the idea.

I thought I'd share three lessons I've learned. What I'm about to tell you isn't new. Instead, I'll be reminding you of some things you've probably read here or elsewhere, but maybe is forgetting to apply.

1. Don't blog for money

This may seem counterintuitive for an article about earning money. But it's true. Yes, I've enjoyed financial success that month. But before it there was a whole year of tirelessly producing content with relatively little financial gain (especially during the first six months). And there's no guarantee I'll make a dime next month.

I'll keep blogging about fitness, regardless of the financial benefits (or lack thereof). Why? I LOVE the topic! If I blogged for money I would have given up a long time ago.

I'd never recommend anyone blog for the sake of money. Just blog because there's something you love to write about.

2. Integrity matters

The fitness niche is tough for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, it is extremely crowded. Secondly, it is plagued by scams—even "legitimate" fitness sites sell products that have no scientific research behind them.

I've kept a simple rule for promoting products: if I would recommend this to a friend or family member, I'll promote it on my blog. Otherwise I'll honestly tell my readers why I wouldn't waste my money on it.

I guess this decision has come with a price. I could probably make more money in the short-term promoting "anabolic acai ape juice" or the "two-minute a day ab machine miracle." But I'm in this for the long haul, and I'm not willing to sacrifice my reputation or a clear conscience for a buck.

I've even received hate mail a few times, but my critics never produce any scientific facts to back up their arguments. Then occasionally I'll get an email like this:

Just wanted to say thanks for your website. It is a breath of fresh air. I have been looking for decent info on "X" (a particular fitness product). The web is saturated with nothing but people selling it so their testimonials didn’t mean much to me. Until I found your site I was frustrated.

This reader didn't buy anything (as far as I know). But she told me she'd be referring her clients to my website. You can't buy that kind of advertising (literally)!

Blog with integrity and you'll win in the long term.

3. Experiment

I remember two steps that significantly boosted my blog's earnings.

I read an article several months ago about changing the size and positioning of adsense widgets. I tried it, and it worked—my earnings went up.

Then I decided to scrap AdSense all together and go strictly with affiliate marketing. This dramatically increased my earnings and gave me complete control over what would be promoted on my blog.

Blogging gurus always talk about the importance of experimentation. I've taken it to heart, and I'm glad I did. In each of the above examples I let go of something that was working and found something that worked better.

One word of caution here: if you make a change to your blog, give it time to work before deciding whether or not the experiment has failed. The time needed, of course, will depend on how much traffic you are getting.

Final Thoughts:

I still have a lot to learn. But blogging with passion and integrity, combined with trial and error, have made it an enjoyable (and profitable) process.

Always See The Long URL With This Firefox Extension

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:18 AM PDT

Sometime ago I wrote that we should be careful with shortened links, because you never know where they are pointing to, and sometimes merely visiting a malicious site could compromise your browser, passwords and the like.

In that post I had also suggested a website you can use to reveal the real destination behind any shortened link, but I realize that going to a website and copying and pasting the thing every time you see a shortened link these days is impractical.

It turns out there is a better solution: a Firefox extension that will do the un-shortening on the fly for you. It is called Long URL Please. Here is a screenshot from their website:

long-url-firefox

I think it is a good idea, given the spread of both shortened links and malicious sites on the web these days. What do you think?

Tool Upload Video di Editor Baru dan Upload Foto Yang Lebih Baik

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 08:35 PM PDT

10 Things I Wish All Bloggers I Read Would Do

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 09:32 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Edward Khoo. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Most of the advice for bloggers online is given from other blog owners and blogging experts. Well, I would like to turn this around and offer you some advice as a reader. Below you’ll find a list of things I wish all the bloggers I read would do.

1. Be easy to understand. Maybe I'm an expert in your field or maybe I'm just trying to be. Either way, domain-specific words and acronyms can be daunting to the uninitiated. Since blogs are the gateway to getting initiated, please spare me from having to learn the language before I can read your blog. If I need Babel Fish to parse your writing, you've already lost me.

2. Be relevant. I'm going to read dozens of blogs today. That may seem like a lot but considering there are over 900k posts uploaded every 24 hours; it's obvious I've already done some serious filtering. Even so, that's a lot of reading for someone who has a real job. I've picked blogs that I think are relevant to my career or life in some way. You've gone through a process to select me as a reader and I've reciprocated by subscribing. Make sure your posts are written for the audience you've cultivated.

3. Be consistent. Nothing worse than going to my favorite blog and see they've taken off a week or two without notice. Should I stop going there? Will it ever come back? Is there a schedule I can follow? If you want regular readers, then be a regular writer.

4. Be interesting. Let's make a deal: I'll give you the most valuable thing I have, my time, and you give me something interesting. It doesn't have to be funny, although that certainly helps. But it does have to be interesting or new or at least novel. This has as much to do with personality as it does with story. If your topic is one I'm already familiar with, like a well-covered news event, then at least give me a fresh take. It's OK to blog about events with observations, but you better make sure your observations of those events are worth reading.

5. Be thorough. I get that blogging may not be your full time job and that you won't be able to explore every topic fully, but I still need a resolution. Give me closure. On every single post. Don't just introduce me to topics and then leave, like a person at a party who starts a conversation and then walks away mid-sentence. Respect the rules of composition and the anatomy of any good story: make sure your posts have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

6. Have authority. I appreciate that your interest extends past what your blog may usually cover. But you need to qualify your authority so I don't question it later. If you run a tech blog and start riffing about politics you better know enough to stand up to the political blogs I'm also reading or admit that your opinion is unqualified. I respect that you're an expert at tech blogging but that doesn't make you an expert at everything. To paraphrase Colin Powell on what makes a good analyst: tell me what you know, tell me what you don't know, and if there's any time left, you can tell me what you think.

7. Be authentic. Considering there's now tens of millions of people throwing up everything they've heard or thought about on the internets, there's a fair chance that whatever it is you're about to write already exists in some form or another. That's OK. I'm reading you because I think your opinion is interesting or valuable. If I find out that it's not really your opinion, but the opinion of your Master or Advertiser or Sponsor, you've lost me. If I want compromised corporate crap journalism I can go to a major newspaper. I'm reading you because you have a quirky opinion that occasionally flies in the face of conventional wisdom. I dig that about you. One that trust is gone, however, so is any appeal of reading your work.

8. Show you enjoy writing. You don't have to smile when you blog, but you should enjoy writing. You don't have to love it every day but you should enjoy it enough to be good at it. Every day. The day you stop having fun writing a blog will be the day it becomes less fun to read. Our relationship is built on mutual satisfaction and it's more fragile and transparent than you may realize. It's OK to not want to blog for a day or two. Or even longer if you give your readers a heads up. Better than tossing up forced content that makes your readers the worse for reading it.

9. Be accessible. Regardless of the teachings of our social media czars, blogging is still largely about one person publishing so many people can read it. Occasionally, however, you'll blog about something that inspires the normally uninspired to want to interact with you. Do yourself a favor and be accessible. This doesn't mean having to respond to every comment or mail but it does mean at least taking part in a conversation you may have started. If you're not willing to interact with readers who are looking for conversation, someone else in your space will.

10. Be something other than a blogger. As good as your writing may be, much of the value to your readers comes from your knowledge and experience in other areas. This doesn't mean you have to "Hemingway" all over the world to bullfights and battles so you have fresh content; it does mean, however, keeping people interested in what you're doing and thinking will be much more challenging if you never do anything interesting. Most of the blogs I read are an output of lives so full they crave to be documented, not random musings from people bored with television.

One of the best ways to improve as a blogger is to be a prolific blog reader. Hold yourself to the lofty demands to which you hold your favorite bloggers.

Want To Sell Your Blogspot Blog?

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 07:06 AM PDT

I used to help people buy and sell blogs, and as I result I get at least a couple of emails weekly from bloggers asking if I can help them to sell their blogs. If I believe the sale is feasible (i.e., the blog is quality one and already makes good money) I do help. Most of the times, however, selling the blogs would be too hard to be worth anyone’s time.

The most clear example of this are people who email me asking if I can help to sell their Blogspot blogs (i.e., a blog they created on Google’s Blogger service). Selling such a blog is almost impossible. Why? First of all because the person is not the real owner of the blog. He owns the content, but the blog is property of Google. In fact if you read Blogger’s Terms of Service you’ll find this sentence in the very first paragraph:

Google also reserves the right to modify, suspend or discontinue the Service with or without notice at any time and without any liability to you.

This means that your blog could be shut down any day, and it would be hard to find a buyer willing to bear this risk.

Second, you would also be violating another clause of the ToS:

7. No Resale of the Service. Unless expressly authorized in writing by Google, you agree not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade, resell or exploit for any commercial purposes (a) any portion of the Service, (b) use of the Service, or (c) access to the Service.

You could try to sell it secretly, but if Google finds out they would probably shut down the account/blog, which again scares most buyers off.

Want some empirical evidence? Check the last 1,000 sites/blogs that were sold on Flippa. I just did. None of them was using Blogger’s platform. All of them had their own domain names.

Truth be told I have seen a couple of Blogspot blogs being sold in the past, but they were generating a lot of revenue with AdSense (e.g., close to $1,000 monthly), so the buyers were willing to take the risk. Other than these exceptions I have never seen a Blogspot blog sell for a decent price.

Does this mean you are screwed if you have a Blogspot blog? Not at all. You’ll just need to solve the situation before you try to sell it.

Remember, while Google owns the platform itself, you own all the content you write there. Here is the quote from the ToS:

Google claims no ownership or control over any Content submitted, posted or displayed by you on or through Google services. You or a third party licensor, as appropriate, retain all patent, trademark and copyright to any Content you submit, post or display on or through Google services and you are responsible for protecting those rights, as appropriate.

So you’ll just need to get your content out of Blogger and hosted on your own website before you can sell it. Here is a quick step-by-step guide for doing that:

  1. Buy a domain name
  2. Get a company to host it
  3. Install WordPress on your domain
  4. Use the “Import” feature on WordPress and import all the posts from your Blogspot blog
  5. Redirect your blogspot blog to your new domain (here is a guide for that)

A second alternative is to point your Blogger account to a custom domain. This is not ideal, however, because your content would still be hosted on Blogger. If you want to try this just go to Dashboard > Settings> Publishing, click on “Switch to: Custom Domain”.
